about

The stories behind this song are based on observations of how people can be close (friend, sister, father) but not know each other deeply. Layers of hidden parts of selves in my observations gave rise to things like secret drinkers, secret affairs and family secrets. All sorts of shit.

When I was younger I saw people behave in ways that were not consistent with how I thought they were 'supposed' to behave. Looking at things remotely as I got older meant I could start to empathise and understand why and how those lies/secrets came about.

Also looking back at my younger self when I started writing this song, I saw the opening lyrics as an ask/desire to get to know my father. It was a 'classic' Irish setup at home with lots of silence and aversion to talking about issues.

The 'funny' thing now about his secrets is he can't communicate after a bad stroke, so the secrets are lost to the deteriorating synapses of his brain.'

lyrics

Tell me your secrets
Tell me your lies
I don't know who you are
Behind your disguise
